I've raved about MainMenu, WeatherDock is great, iGTD is always open, MagiCal is brilliant, Menushade was in one of my first posts, NetNewsWire is indispensable, and I could go on. If you're never used Quicksilver, it's the number one freeware Mac utility for any system. I've found these programs to be very sub-standard on the Mac like SPSS, you're basically getting a ported version of the program that is several versions behind and runs quite slowly. Everyone in scholarship needs some way to organize all of their citations. I've mentioned a lot of small freeware programs on this site, but these are the workhorses of daily academic life: word processors, reference managers, and organizational tools.

You can read more about the link between colors and psychology here. Using multiple colors, from a psychological standpoint, tends to communicate diversity. Here’s some examples of famous brands that use 4 or more colors for their logo… I generally don’t recommend using more than 3 colors for a logo, but there’s always exceptions to the rules, and I don’t like placing limitations on creativity. Although the shade of yellow is being used at a very low saturation, it’s within the yellow category, so the same guidelines apply. Notice how blue, yellow, and red oppose each other in a triangular shape. The Orlando Magic logo uses two contrasting shades of blue paired with a grayscale shade.Īnother approach you can take when using 3 colors for your logo is to pick 3 shades that oppose each other on the color wheel in a triangular shape. The Oklahoma City Thunder logo uses two contrasting shades of blue paired with orange, which opposes blue on the color wheel. Here’s some examples of 3 colors being used effectively in a logo… Either of the above paired with a shade from the grayscale.Colors opposite each other on the color wheel. You’ll generally want to apply the same rules of using 2 colors as you would with 3 colors… If you want to get a little more creative, you can use 3 colors for your logo. Black, white and gray go well with any color… You can use different shades of the same color as long as they’re at different contrasts…įinally, you could also take a single color and pair it with any shade in grayscale. You don’t always have to use colors that oppose each other on the color wheel though. Professional sports teams tend to make good use of the color wheel when establishing their logos and brand colors. Choosing opposing colors ensures that they’ll complement each other. Colors close to each other on the color wheel tend to clash, especially when being used at a similar contrast. There was a work bench, a drill press, a vice, and a set of welding bottles. Regrettably up the back were the remains of Timmy Mayer’s car. There was just enough room for the Zerex Special, or the Cooper-Oldsmobile as it was renamed, and the Tasman Cooper, the one that Bruce had driven. We were in New Malden, in a corner of a factory with a load of earth-moving machines, with a sort of dirt floor, although there had been a bit of concrete there at one time. Wal said to me, ‘What’s your job?’ ‘Mechanic.’ ‘No, you’re the go-fer.’ And so I was the go-fer when I arrived. I may have exaggerated slightly, because I knew bugger all! When I got there, on the shop floor it was just Wally Willmott, Tyler Alexander, and me. He hired me as mechanic, and he asked me what I knew about it. He needed some more Kiwis, and I was the next Kiwi that got the phone call. He explained to me that he was going to get his team really going, wanted to employ Kiwis, and would I like to come and work for him? He said he had his own workshop now, because they’d worked out of Parnell’s originally, and that he was expanding. Meanwhile Bruce had done the Tasman Series with a pair of Coopers, and in the interim he’d bought the Zerex Special, and he was going to do a lot more. It wasn’t until May 1964 that Eoin Young called me and said, ‘Bruce is here, he wants to talk to you.’īruce said, ‘What are you doing?,’ and I said, ‘Not a whole lot.’ I had managed to blag some rides in Formula Junior, but that had all came to an end when Esso took the money away from all the little teams. I never really thought I would finish up working for him. When I first came over in 1962 and started going to the races I would go and talk to him, at Aintree or Silverstone or Goodwood or wherever. As things went on and Bruce succeeded, that was the example for all the Kiwis – you get yourself on a boat, and you get to England, and just start racing! When I saw Prince Bira I’d decided that I wanted to be a Grand Prix driver, but I had no idea how I would do it. I had already written about him, because I was working for a newspaper, and I remember him saying to me that I had spelled his name wrongly – I wrote M-A-C – and he gave me a little blast about that! The more Kiwi the better Inevitably you get to meet the other drivers, although he was way above my level. He used to come back and race every winter, and that’s when I really got to meet him, in 1961-’2, when I had my Lotus 11 at the same race meetings. And that led to him winning the Driver to Europe, and going to England. My recollection, and I used to go to a lot of events with my father, is that then he got the Cooper ‘Bobtail’ sportscar from Jack, and then a Cooper single-seater. The big star of the day was Prince Bira, and there was a young chap called Jack Brabham.īruce had had an Austin Seven, and at that point he was just starting with his Ford 10 Special. I’d already heard his father’s name, because Les was racing, and he was one of the people behind the New Zealand GP. I first saw Bruce race in January 1955 when my father took me to the Ardmore circuit, when I had just turned 14. In the first part of a two-part story, he recalls the early days of the McLaren team. He first had to pay his dues as a mechanic, becoming one of the original employees Bruce hired in early 1964. Howden Ganley followed in the footsteps of fellow Kiwi Bruce McLaren when he tried to forge a racing career in Europe. That said, making one once I reach a certain degree of progress would be pretty simple.Īs far as the "vital statistic" page, I am going to include at some point just a blank multi-line field that you will be able to put whatever you want in, but it won't allow calculations or the like.Īt some point I may go back and do a character sheet that's shorter and custom-made, and I recognize that a lot of people want that, but until I finish up making a Swiss Army Knife styled character sheet I'm not going to go in and do it myself. A printer-friendly version is rather low on my priorities list even though it would be nice, form-fillable is sort of antithetical to it. For the most part it's pretty simple-the text is an epic pain, since PDF formatting =/= SVG formatting, which is what Inkscape wants. That said, I *am* going to release the source with V3, and I may make a tutorial for opening up the character sheet in Inkscape to get what you want to get. Unless someone wants to hand me what would probably amount to $120 or so for distro rights for their fonts, I'm sticking to what I've got in my library, and, to be honest, Catalysts' are better. You may notice that my fonts aren't actually the same ones as the character sheet had, just very similar ones, for instance. This means that while I get by for the impressive material price of $0, I can't necessarily do everything they did the way they did. Remember, I'm working with print material using a digital production pipeline the two are not necessarily the same, and Catalyst used Adobe products (ID6 for the PDF) while I'm using entirely FOSS stuff. I don't want to modify the built-in character sheet, which is the first-two pages it comes through pretty bad so I'd have to strip off a lot of the stuff, then add it back in using the proper methods. Rather than go specialist, I'd rather just go really long so that people don't have to dig up a special character sheet for everyone my idea is that you can have one sheet on a flash drive and copy it to all of your players, rather than need to send them a link. In short, my goal is to take everything possible into a single 4-5 page sheet and make it flow well. Again, in 2.2 there's already a third page with more spell and power/spirit spaces (if you follow the example for "Silver" from my site, you'll see that both I and Catalyst use the slots as such), a second vehicle (there will probably be a couple more on a later page as well). I'll probably include at least 20 slots for cyberware, which should be plenty unless you're Delta'ing a lot of really small things, which could probably go in notes (like cybereye attachments in 3rd Edition, for instance). As an added note, essence loss from cyberware can be calculated. Augmentations aren't as high issue as magic, because they do eat from Essence, and while it's possible to get a lot you probably won't have that many on a starter character, meaning they'll probably go on the end of page 3 or early page 4. Another thing I'm considering is having "Stuff Pages", essentially 1-page standalone things with copied over vehicle/augmentation/weapon/whatever slots, but it's at Priority D, so to speak, after creating a sheet that works for at least 75% of runners without any issue. I've already added in an extra vehicle slot. I'm contemplating specialist sheets, but to be honest I may just make it one really, really big sheet and make bookmarks (5 pages would probably be the tops). Source page (plus tutorial) for those who want to make their own: Version 2.5a with calculated attributes and essence as well as extra gear spots. Suggestions for V3 are still open V2.5 will include initiation and submersion, calculated movement speeds, and searchable text on the third page, while V3 will have even more functionality for quick reference, including modified AGI/REA for armor and more fun stuff. In addition, there is a second vehicle section and another Adept Power/Special Abilties section. So here's some links: V1 is the original sheet with just some form fillable stuff, V2.2 is an extended character sheet with some automatic calculations and a third page used both for some of the calculations but also for the wonder that is having enough spell blanks on the character sheet to actually pick a Magic A spellcaster and not run out of room. However, I happen to have Scribus and a few clues about how to use it, so without further ado, I present my form fillable character sheet for SR5. The first thing I noticed when I went through SR5 is that there was no form fillable sheet (seriously, with PDF releases, you'd think companies publishing character sheets would just make them when they were working on the original PDF's). And then there are the ones that seem more religious like supernatural healing for example. There are some, you might call them the technical disciplines of magic, that seem sort of scientific to us. We have this general question that we go over all semester, which is what is the relationship of magic to religion and science? Certain aspects of magic seem more like science - things like alchemy from which chemistry is derived or astrology, which is connected to astronomy and so on. I want the students to think about a number of questions about magic in antiquity and then think about how that relates to the modern western world. What’s covered in your current course Magic and the Supernatural in the Ancient World? With Halloween at hand, W&M News asked Spaeth to tell us more. “Unfamiliar in that we talk about the differences and familiar in that we talk about the similarities.” “What I’m always trying to do in my teaching is make the ancient world both unfamiliar to students and familiar to them,” Spaeth said. Teaching her last year before retirement, Spaeth expanded her seminar course this fall to accept more students. Her classes are quite popular and draw a cross-section of students across all disciplines and systems of values and beliefs. Spaeth, professor of classical studies at William & Mary, teaches and researches in the areas of ancient religion and magic. She convinces them by presenting magic, witches and related tools of the trade. I prefer Boot Camp, because it takes full advantage of the hardware, while a virtual machine might suffer from performance issues and give you a bad experience. You can install it either in Boot Camp or a virtual machine utility such as VMWare Fusion or even VirtualBox. If you have enough space on your Mac, I would recommend you download an evaluation copy of the Windows 10 Enterprise 90-day trial and give it a spin just to get an initial feel of what Windows is like in 2017. This means your Mac is just like any other PC out there that’s capable of running Windows. Starting about 10 years ago, Macs began using an Intel x86 CPU. From a hardware standpoint, one of the big things that used to separate Windows and Apple computers was the processor. Set Up Windows 10 on your Mac for a Test Runīefore you go out and buy a new Windows 10 PC or build one, it’s probably best to give it a trial run. First, you’ll need to get all the important data and files off of your Mac. Moving from Mac to Windows is a two-step process. But they are both point-and-click graphical user interfaces at their core. Yes, there are differences in how certain parts of the user interface work. Windows 10 and macOS are surprisingly similar in behavior. At the same time, if you want cheap and basic, options are available. You can get the best-in-class graphics adapters, mega fast CPUs, gobbles of RAM, and tonnes of SSD storage – cheap. The Windows 10 PC has never been better, not only because it’s more affordable but very powerful. Apple’s polarizing MacBook updates over the past few years and lack of competitive desktop machine offerings are probably helping that, too. This makes a Windows PC more attractive than ever. Microsoft is stepping up its game, both in the operating system and the hardware departments. Knowing how to use your grass clippings has a larger benefit than you might think on the health of your lawn or garden. Additionally, if you have recently sprayed your lawn with weed killer it is best to simply bag these clippings up and discard them. Leaving clumps of grass on your lawn could damage the growing grass by choking it. Grass clippings, make an excellent organic mulch which has high amounts of nitrogen, something all plants would need to grow and flourish. They will decompose in the soil layers, thus enhancing the quality. Incorporate 2 to 3 inches mass of grass clippings 6 inches deep in garden soil. If the grass is going to be wet when you cut it, there is potential for the blades to clump together. Use Grass Clippings as Slow Release Fertilizer Rich in nitrogen, oxygen, and phosphorus, grass clippings can be used as effective slow-release organic fertilizer in the garden. Negative EffectsĪll of this being said, there are instances when leaving grass clippings on your lawn can be harmful rather than practical. However, use caution in the thickness of clipping layers. By packing the clippings in flower beds and around vegetables, you will be helping the plant retain water, maintain a warm soil temperature, and prevent weeds. But you can make your own nitrogen-rich liquid boost just from your excess grass, water, and thyme. Beyond providing essential nutrients, grass clippings make a marvellous mulch for trees, bushes, shrubs and hedges in the drier months. It is important to remember that aged or dried grass clippings are classed as brown material and freshly chopped clippings are ‘green’ material. Organic fertilizers can be costly and they often come in small quantities at the retail level. This will ensure that the pile decomposes properly. An easy way to benefit from lawn clippings is to add them to your compost pile! Just as your lawn will benefit from the added nutrients, your compost will too! An alternative is to use clippings as natural mulch. Use your grass clippings to make a fertilizer tea One of my absolute favorite ways to use excess grass clippings is to make a fertilizer tea. If you aren’t keen on the untidy look of grass clippings covering your lawn, there are other ways to take advantage of clipped grass. You can either use a mower with a mulching blade attachment or do it by hand with a rake or shovel. This simply means layering them around plants to act as organic insulation and prevent weed growth. It also will help increase your soil organic matter (SOM) which ultimately contributes to the sequestration of carbon – so you’ll be doing your small part to help with climate change! Another easy option for what to do with grass clippings is mulching. Cut grass will decompose quickly, providing nutrients for your soil, particularly nitrogen, that the grass needs. Variations of this theme include the use of Fresh Grass Clippings (FGC) on other locations, and Grass Composting. Recycling grass clippings is a generally overlooked and grossly underrated aspect of lawn care.įor all of my fellow “leave it on the lawn” yard owners, this indolent act actually proves to benefit your soil health, and subsequently improves lawn growth. Has your freshly mowed lawn left behind a messy array of grass clippings? Well instead of trashing these pesky blades, or leaving them scattered across your lawn - although this actually proves to be beneficial (more on this later) - there are many practical ways you can benefit from this detritus. Today I’m seeing the traditional version again but nothing happens when I click on the Reply buttons (even in a different browser with lower security settings). Yesterday I was being taken to a version of this site with a completely different visual format (I’m guessing it’s a newer version) in which comments were not appearing no matter how much I tweaked my browser. I’m having trouble with Ghacks these last couple of days. Sorry for not replying directly to your comment with the Reply button. But for me, KeePass X/XC are both more than “good enough” for my needs, and definitely better than the alternatives I’ve found. when your database is locked, you can use Touch ID. Our new browser plugin KeePassXC-Browser can be downloaded from the Chrome Webstore for Google Chrome, Chromium and Vivaldi or the Mozilla Add-ons Repository for Mozilla Firefox. It will still prompt you to input the master password when you run the program, but for subsequent unlocks, i.e. KeePassXC 2.7.0 brings this feature natively (without a plugin). This might be what you’re really complaining about, and I have to agree that the forked projects really lag behind the original Mono-based KeePass for Windows. It provides a convenient way to unlock your vault by using your devices fingerprint scanner, or your Windows PIN. Of course, that doesn’t mean all forks have the same level of development effort. Every fork of an open source project is equally “official”, which is to say that each one is supported by the developers who created it. I’m not sure what kind of support you’re looking for. “the fact that there is no official support for Linux and Mac is a huge drawback” |
